Sermon – No Matter How Great Our Sins... (Luke 7:36-50) – September 17, 2026

Today's Gospel tells us about a sinful woman. She enters Simon's house, approaches Jesus, and falls at his feet.

She washes Jesus' feet with her tears, dries them with her hair, kisses them, and anoints them with fragrant oil.

This woman doesn't try to defend her past or hide her sins.

He acknowledges his sins and sees in Jesus the Lord who can forgive him and change his life.

Therefore Jesus says to him:

Your sins have been forgiven.

And then:

Your faith saved you; go in peace.

This is how a woman is freed from sin: by approaching Jesus with humility, repentance, and love. Jesus' forgiveness is not merely erasing the past; it is giving a person a new life.

The woman who entered the house as a sinner leaves it forgiven and full of hope.

Church tradition has associated this woman with Saint Mary Magdalene .

In her life, we see a beautiful example of repentance and transformation: a woman living in sin became a faithful disciple of Jesus and one of the first witnesses to the Resurrection.

We can learn from him too.

No matter how great our sins, what matters is not straying from Christ.

When we approach Him with sincere repentance, we find mercy, forgiveness, and a new life.

In the intercession of Saint Mary Magdalene, let us ask the Lord for a humble and repentant heart that will recognize our sins.

After being cleansed of our sins, let us approach the feet of Jesus with a love as great as his, and especially welcome the Lord with love, who gave himself to us in the Eucharist.

May the Virgin Mary help us to live a life free from sin.
